Ah. One of my all time favorite movies! I always watch it when it comes on the telly.

Did I ever mention that I also got to see the stage play on its last year with Zero Mostel?
That was a long, long time ago.

I love that movie...got it from the $5.00 bin at wallyworld last year. I also love "One night with the king"...got it from the same place.

I'll bet the play was good too SherShalom!

I love that move, and love the music. Every time I watch it, it makes me pity the young men who come calling on our daughters in the future. They'll have a full blown Tevye on their hands.

I can just hear my dh now:
"I won't be sorry? I'm sorry already!"

Oh that's funny Toshav!

The first time I ever saw the movie..maybe a year ago..they get to the part where it's finally Shabbat and they're singing the blessing over the children. I started laughing! I thought it was a spoof type thing until I got my hands on the Shabbat prayers and realized it was the real deal!!

AND...I didn't realize that some Jewish communities actually DID have a match maker! It wasn't until I found the Oprah video on today's Hasidic Jews in NY that they actually do STILL have match makers in some communities, and that marriages really are still arranged in some groups.

The second part of the movie just broke my heart though. I cried despite the forgiveness that occurred. By the time the Russian revolution came along, it was a downward spiral for all Jews in Europe.

Judith ~ You never saw this movie until a year ago?!? Wow. I thought EVERYONE knew of it!

Obviously, with my family & background, I've been familiar with the movie since before it was a movie!

Alright already!!! LOL. :s_biggrin

Hi Shershalom!

I knew OF it for years and years, but had never seen it before last year.

I don't even recall seeing it on the racks in video rental stores. I didn't get to go to the movies the way I would like to have so really, the first chance I had to see it was last year!

The only thing I knew OF it was that it was supposed to be a really good movie, but nobody really ever said what it was about. I know it appeared on TV a few times, but I've never been much of a TV person. When we did have it...the 'couch potatoes' generally had control of the remote so to speak...I didn't get to watch what I liked. Or else I was working...usually swing shift.

So...last year was the first chance I had :)

Someone on another forum recommended it to me on another forum a couple of years ago. I wrote it down and have been hunting for it ever since!

I'm glad you enjoyed it Ben. There's so much a person can draw from it aside from just the surface stuff.
