A dear friend of mine has just told me her two-month-old son is in heart failure. He was born with a congenital heart defect which they were hoping to repair when he was a little bigger and stronger (six to nine months), but it looks like emergency surgery will have to be done immediately.

We are all heart sick and stricken with the news and desperately praying for him.

To add to the difficulty, he is a fraternal twin, so the family has another newborn to care for as well as seven other children.

Please, please pray for them.

Baby H went on medication during his heart failure, which stabilized him without surgery. However, he was flown to a centre with pediatric cardiologist who did conducted a number of tests to determine why he is continually desat-ing. Desat is a drop in oxygen levels that can be very dangerous.

The tests showed everything (feeding, swallowing, shunt function, etc.) working as expected. Why he continues to desat is a mystery and has his medical team stumped.

He his being transferred back to his home hospital where he will continued to be monitored closely. It doesn't look like this little guy will be going home anytime soon, but we praise Yah his little heart is still pumping.

Thanks for your prayers.

I can't think of anything more difficult than knowing that a problem exists, is causing issues, but the source is a mystery. It's so hard to work with that because you can only control symptoms for a time before the source of the problem evolves more.

So, I pray that the source of the problems can be found and fully corrected. That the mystery be revealed.

It's funny you should ask for an update because I was going to post again and request more prayer.

At that time I last posted, they discovered what was wrong, and then discovered more wrong. :(

Because one side of his diaphram is paralyzed (it was knicked during his first open heart surgery) he was aspirating his milk into his lungs every time he ate and they had no idea. So they put him an ng tube into him, which seemed to help. He stabilized and was sent home, now tube fed and with oxygen.

Still he continued to desat at home was again rushed to the hospital. Once there they discovered the shunt from his lungs was collapsing. In an attempt to reduce the amount of invasive procedures this little guy has to endure, the cardiologist entered through his thigh and was able to put mesh supports into the shunt. Still he continues to desat and go through frightening sweating/vomiting/suctioning/crying episodes.

It is believed he was growing out of his shunt, and the cardiology team expressed different opinions about what to do about it. Replacing the shunt requires a six -hour open heart surgery. But some cardiologists believe there is no choice but to do the repair on his heart now, a 10-hour open heart surgery. The repair is supposed to be done between six and nine months (he is three months old), but they're not sure his heart can wait that long.

Either way, it appears he's headed toward another open heart surgery.

Please pray for him. For those interested in seeing updates, you can go to:

I pray for mercy on this little one. I pray that in this surgery, they get it right, and that YHVH restore his diaphragm and his health. YHVH doesn't need surgery to fix things, but sometimes that's what he uses to benefit mankind, and we thereby see his glory.

I pray for his parents/family too. This is horribly difficult on them, and I hope they are able to reach out to YHVH and find comfort.

Toshav, I don't facebook at all. It's links are even blocked to my pc. Is it ok If I ask for updates now and then, or if something changes?

I'm off FB as well Judith and it's a public/no-membership-required page, but if your computer blocks it I'll be happy to update here.

He's on a blood thinner called Plavix which carries its own risks but they don't want him on it for long. There's even discussions of whether to put him on Viagra because it's a dilator. lol. As his mom said, "That's one for the baby books."

lol! One for the baby books is right lol! Viagra is actually for lowering blood pressure (hence the vasodilator) but it just happens to have a pleasant affect for men in need ;) So glad mom has a sense of humor, that helps a whole bunch with things are tense.

And thank-you for continuing to post updates here. I appreciate that, a bunch!

Tomorrow is D-day.

The parents and cardiology team have decided it is best to do the full repair of the heart, so the open heart surgery will be tomorrow. The repair involves a number of aspects, the most important of which will be to create a wall between the left and right sides of the heart. Normally the heart is four-chambered, but baby Henry only has three chambers. This means non-oxygenated blood returning from circulating in the body is mixing with oxygenated blood which is about to recirculate. The result is low blood oxygen levels throughout his whole body.

But there is very good news going into the surgery: His diaphragm seems miraculously healed! As I mentioned, it was nicked in a previous surgery and paralyzed. When I saw him in the hospital once, His mom said his diaphragm on his left side was under his left armpit. A ultrasound yesterday showed it had healed somehow and was in its correct position performing its correct function. Praise Yah.

Please pray about the surgery tomorrow. It is very risky considering his young age. His mom has posted a prayer request list:

Things to be praying for Thursday.
- Straight forward textbook repair.
- Drainage tube won't need to stay in too long, average is 2 days he told us 5+ is a possibility.
- That there will be no swelling and they will be able to close his chest up after the surgery.
-Pray that he will be coming off oxygen after his repair.
-Saturation levels go up.
-As he heals that he will begin to eat orally.
Praying against stroke, brain damage etc..

Thank you in advance for your prayers.

Yah Bless it, I KNEW he'd come through! Yah is soooo good. That diaphragm is so very important that a person can't even sit properly if certain things go wrong with it.

Thank you so much for that report Toshav. I have an overwhelming sense of relief as a result. I didn't even consiously realize that this baby's situation bothered me that much.

Ok..now for the rest of what Yah's hand can do through the surgeons, and thru healing.

Thank-You so much YHVH for your tenderness and mercy towards our little ones! I pray that this child grows up to have great love and service toward you.

May his healing continue.

He's out of surgery and seems to be doing alright, thank Yah. This is his mom's post:

"He's doing good not perfect Dr. G said but good. His blood pressure is a little low and he's in pain, so they are just trying to find a good balance of pain meds for him. He has pacemaker wires in just in case his rhythm changes. Really the next 24-ish hours are critical. Thank you everyone for praying him through the day. We are praying he will continue to go uphill and make steps towards home.

Henry your the strongest little 4 month old, keep fightin baby your on the homestretch!!!"

Thanks for the update. I've been very concerned for him all day, and I hope/pray he continues to do well. Poor little guy..I'm sure they will find a way to alleviate his pain, and perhaps when they do, he'll relax a little and do better.

I hope mom and family are able to receive YHVH through this, because that's the best source of comfort there can be. I'm keeping the family in prayer, too.

His mom posted this two hours ago:

"He's doing well. He needed a blood transfusion last night which helped his blood pressure. He's slowly being weaned off some meds. He was on 10 litres of 02 this morning and is down to .5!! Praying he comes right off! His Sats are 99%!!! His nurse said he's been excellent today."

I believe the "sat" is the saturation rate, which must refer to oxygen saturation rate. From what I remember, 99% is the desired level.

Thank you, Heavenly Father. Keep him in Your hands and bless him with healing and good health.

Thanks for praying, friends.
